Wave Obstructors & Enhancers: Currents of Wisdom Series

Scenic beach view with rolling ocean waves and a clear sky.

Welcome back to Currents of Wisdom Weekly Q&A Series—a space where we explore transformative insights from my new book, The Way of the Wave: Nature’s Model for Navigating Life’s Currents. In this series, I share practical wisdom on embracing life’s natural flow to overcome challenges, reduce stress, and cultivate inner peace. This week, we dive into Wave Obstructors and Wave Enhancers!

You write a lot about Wave Obstructors and Wave Enhancers. What are they and how do they impact our life currents and our ability to “go with the Wave”?

Wave Obstructors have a dual effect on riding or going with the Wave: They induce us to control more and to accept less.  In doing so, they are barriers to freeing our life currents and aligning with their natural flow.  We become out of sync with them, to our detriment.  Prominent obstructors include our strong judgments and high expectations of others and things, limited and negative thinking, avoidance, failure to set boundaries, fear, and anger.  In the book, I share ways I have learned to overcome them, or at least considerably diminish their impact.

Wave Enhances on the other hand foster the flow and mitigate the wave obstructors. The main ones are acceptance, trust, humility, truth, intuition, and self-care.  For example, when you accept people and things as they are, there is no need to control them.   When you trust the currents (and that things will be okay) you need not fear them as much.   And when you are humble, you are open to new ideas and choices that can meaningfully impact your life.

In The Way of the Wave I show you how to diminish the impact of Wave Obstructors and harness the power of Wave Enhancers so you can “go with the Wave.”

I invite you to reflect on your own life—what are some Wave Obstructors that have undermined you, and which Wave Enhancers have helped you stay in sync with life’s flow? Share your thoughts in the comments below and let’s continue to ride the wave together!

May you go with the Wave!
